Product and Mechanical Design Team Lead

Location: St Neots (PE19 8YP), Cambridge

Hours: full time, 40 hours a week. Hybrid working optional.

We are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer and team leader as an addition to our dynamic Product Engineering team. This is a player/coach role where the successful job holder will be responsible not only for the design of mechanical enclosures and assemblies, but also for the line management of a team consisting of PCB designers, electronic technicians, and a PLM co-ordinator.

Your role:

You will be responsible for the line management of a small team who design the physical aspects of Pico’s products, this includes PCB and Mechanical aspects. In addition to this, you will be carrying out detailed Mechanical Design activities in support of New Product Development, as well as design, prototype, develop and finalise new electronic package concepts.  

In this fast-paced role you will also be responsible for assisting with the product transition into production, including providing all relevant assembly information, enhancing, and supporting all product including assisting the technical customer support team. Where necessary and appropriate, take the lead mechanical design role within the team to assist with project planning, project management and team leadership relating to mechanical and PCB design issues.

What we are looking for:

Someone with line management and Mechanical Design experience. More specifically…

Line Management:

  • A good appreciation and preferably experience incorporating:
  • Management of resource allocations against agreed priorities
  • Technical leadership
  • Mentoring of junior team members
  • Performance management and personal development
  • Reinforcing process and setting standards

Mechanical Design:

  • Well-developed Mechanical Design skills with at least 3 years’ experience of the following:
  • Experience of 3D CAD systems (Solidworks experience preferable)
  • Knowledge of use of materials, extrusions, casting techniques, plastics and other topics relating to product design
  • Knowledge of manufacturing constraints and design for manufacture

Your schedule:

This role is a full-time position, 40 hours a week based in our St Neots office! We do offer hybrid working (2-3 days a week in the office) but it is completely up to you whether you choose to work in this way. We understand the importance of a work-life balance and it is essential that we support our Piconians to get it right, therefore we have core office hours of 10am-3pm, meaning you can manage your 40 hours flexibly throughout the week.
